You should be able to use any browser on an old obsolete pc. With that mentality we will never get to a point where an application is "light weight" anymore. Having a new computer with 8GB+ of ram isn't an excuse for Mozillia to code a browser that uses more resources. The fact is you shouldn't need a new pc with a ton of RAM to use a browser comfortably. I use (and will keep using) FF in my main computer but it has 8G of RAM so I never addressed this issue until I had to setup those 2G laptops.īrowsers shouldn't use a lot of resources. To do this, click Menu -> Options -> General, uncheck the Use recommended performance settings box, and check the Use Hardware Acceleration. Go to about:memory and select Minimize memory usage. I didn't notice this issue until I had to install FF in computers with only 2G of RAM, at first I thought that nowadays 2G is kind of short but what surprised me is that Chrome (with the same extension) was running well using much less RAM and CPU in the same computers. In Firefox Preferences, uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
So far I have only one extension installed (an ad-blocker) everything else is just a clean installation. I had also FF for many years in different computers (windows and Linux). Yet, software is using more RAM and isn't that much better than older versions, and sometimes it takes twice as long to load than the older versions.Hello, yes that is the first thing I tried. Interestingly, over the last 15 years or so things like cell phones and electronic parts have gotten smaller and better. Their products are using significantly more RAM and aren't that much better than the older versions. It seems like Firefox and all the other software companies are going backwards. Even on a fast computer with tons of RAM the newer versions of Firefox have/cause a lag due to the amount of RAM they use. I am so tempted to just downgrade to one of these older, outdated versions despite the security risks.
Why is it that all of these newer versions of Firefox use twice as much memory as the older Mozilla browsers, even with no plugins or addons? The newer versions are using 110 MB+ where as the Mozilla browser used maybe 40-60 MB and sometimes less. I would like someone to explain something to me because I must be missing something here.
